One of the best business decisions I’ve made recently didn’t involve a spreadsheet, a strategy session, or a marketing plan.
It started with a question.
Yesterday I was meeting with one of our development partners after discussing a project we’re building together. Before we wrapped up, I asked him something I’ve decided I’m going to ask much more often:
“What could CLB Builds do to serve you even better on this project… and on the next one?”
He didn’t have to think about it.
He immediately started sharing ideas.
Some were simple improvements that we can implement right away. Others were suggestions about how we communicate and manage projects. Then he mentioned something I hadn’t expected.
He pointed out a highly specialized niche within petroleum construction that very few contractors are serving well and suggested that we begin training a crew specifically for that work.
That one comment may end up shaping an entire division of our company.
It made me stop and think.
I could have spent months researching market opportunities, analyzing competitors, attending conferences, and trying to predict where demand was headed.
Instead, one honest conversation with a customer produced an insight that I may never have discovered on my own.
It reminded me that our customers see our business from a perspective we never can.
They’re the ones buying construction services every day. They know what’s frustrating. They know what’s missing. They know which contractors make their jobs easier and which ones create unnecessary work.
If we’re humble enough to ask and disciplined enough to listen, they’ll often tell us exactly how to build a better business.
That’s one of the reasons I don’t really think of our customers as customers.
I think of them as development partners.
Every project teaches us something. Every conversation has the potential to improve our systems, our communication, and ultimately the experience we create for the next client.
That realization changed something for me.
From now on, one of the final questions we’ll ask at the end of every project is:
“What can we do to make your next project with CLB Builds even better?”
Not because we’re looking for compliments.
Because we’re looking for blind spots.
If we’re serious about building a company that continually improves, then the people we serve deserve a seat at the table when we’re designing the systems that serve them.
The best ideas don’t always come from inside your business.
Sometimes they’re waiting on the other side of a simple question.
